Quick Study 05.04

While there are certainly a lot of cat pictures around, they do not always catch the grace and character of these animals. This painting has managed to do that.
The flowing lines of ears and eyes together with the curve of the pose combine with the angular lines of the snout to create that feline mixture of curiosity and dignity.
The stark but well valued contrast of the colors used brings the object of the painting to the foreground and helps the image to stand out in a row of thumbnail pictures. At the same time the inclusion of white in the flowers of the foreground and the dust motes aswell as the green in the shadows of the fur and the eyes help to mute that contrast and give the painting more depth.
The title suggests this is a quick study and certainly some of the charm of this picture lies in the broad brush strokes but in my opinion the picture would deserve some more detailing of the fur like on the right side of the face and neck. This might get rid of the contour line across nose and forehead and give more tension, flow and substance to the body and the pose.
All in all this is a very nice study with impact enough to make me write this critique.
